The medical service (CMAP) was established in April 2009 and offers basic medical services to prisoners (alongside CTAP) as well as intermittent medical help for the poor (eg as part of the MOBILE service). There are currently 3 NGOs providing limited medical assistance in the prisons: Prison Fellowship, MSF, ICRC and LICADHO. CMAP is partnering with them to provide the best available medical care to prisoners. CMAP is also working with our partner NGOs in orphanages, slums and relocation sites to bring some basic medical services to these groups. The medical team are all volunteers.
In the prisons basic medicines are given and some patients referred to other agencies where appropriate e.g. Prison Fellowship takes care of the foreign prisoners, whilst MSF sees the HIV and TB patients.
Kim Sreang is the CMAP Health Care Coordinator and heads up the prison team which sees an average of 45 patients on Saturdays. The team also includes Dr Chenda and 4-5 students from IU (International University). They work alongside the prison nurse to treat conditions such as infectious diseases (including chest, skin and throat infections), malnutrition and depression.
Other projects that the CMAP team has undertaken include de-worming more than 1,000 prisoners and staff, and scabies eradication. We plan to roll out these programs to the other prisons we work in over the next year.
In October 2009, the CMAP team travelled with the CTAP team on the One-2-One MOBILE Clinic to Kampong Speu province to deliver dental and medical care at one of the New Hope for Orphans orphanages. The whole orphanage was successfully treated in one day!
